Here we are, with a one-way ticket to Bangkok via Cairo in hand and many ideas that shake our head.
Both of us, since long, were thinking to arrange an adventure of this kind, among the scents and colors of Asia, among the people of the Mekong and the Vietnamese plateaus. A supercharged bike will be our most intimate traveling companion, the one which we will really share every moment with. The departure is fast approaching and we are going crazy every day to try to solve all the little troubles linked to a trip of this magnitude.

However the excitement is growing continuously.
Before landing in Bangkok we face three days in Cairo where we will visit the pyramids of Giza, the city and the surroundings. Another air transfer will take us finally to Asia where we will start the real journey that will last for about six months. We will ride to the inland western Thai border with Myanmar, then continue northward meeting Ayutthaya, Lopburi and other less known places. Through various natural parks and many dirt roads traveled, we will arrive in Chang Mai, in the Golden Triangle region, where after some hiking, we will cross the Laotian border. We will discover Laos, as we know little of it except for the city of Luang Prabang and the capital Vientiane. For now our plan is to cut transversely to the state border with Vietnam in the region of the highlands and mountains of Sapa. I dare not think of the enormous effort that my legs will suffer, perfect trained for hiking in the mountains, but much less for pedaling. The Laotian land is almost entirely mountainous and we will sweat seven shirts every day to reach the chosen destination, without considering the possible last days of monsoon rains! Vietnam is rather huge and offers the traveler many types of landscapes such as the magnificent Halong Bay and the coast or the remote villages of mountain people near the Chinese border or the vast floating markets on Mekong Delta. Surely the two months that we decided to spend here will not be sufficient to fully enjoy the Vietnamese culture and traditions, but we will try to learn to better understand the lives of these people so different from us.
I am sure that Cambodia, with its flourishing Khmer past which is greatest demonstration the lost city of Angkor, will offer to our eyes, visions of the sublime and unforgettable time that was, is and will be. Siem Reap and the Tonle Sap lake will be a inprescindibile step to relax and catch our breath, while the capital Phnom Penh will show us a complete and detailed overview of urban life in Cambodia.
The journey, however, will not end here... a third flight will take us to the land of kangaroos where unfortunately we temporarily will hang the bike to engage in better paid activities, but surprises and adventures do not end here ... |
