ImageSooner or later I too had to enter the world of low cost flights. November 2004, the airport of Orio al Serio Milan? Bergamo? boh! From this small provincial airport we talke off to the Swedish capital, the "Venice of the North" (but how many there are ?!?): Stockholm. The delay of about 2 hours accumulated at departure is caused by a snow storm that is raging on Scandinavia and has prevented the aircraft to get up in the air in the direction of the Po valley fog. We arrived in town at two in the morning, after about 2 hours flight and half an hour coach drive on a road full of ice (the airport is even more provincial than Milan). A taxi takes us on a beautiful boat-hostel where we had booked our accommodation and the next morning we are ready to explore the city ...

Stockholm

As soon as we wake up we note that the city at night has been covered by folk and, fortunately not too much, blanket of snow. The city is spacious, clean, orderly, stilll... Stockholm fascinates us, it is beautiful to walk among its thousands of islands and observe the people on the move. Here we can forget our crowded cities, and our Italian lifestyle to relax and unwind! The sea is beautiful, even in winter, it invades the city up to the center. The isle of Djugarden, former hunting reserve of the king, is home to some of the most beautiful attractions of the city: the unmissable Vasa Museet, which contains the famous ship sank in '600 and recovered 333 years later. The most interesting part of Stockholm is undoubtedly the old town, the Gamla Stan, which is linked to the peninsula by bridges. As you enter you can see huge royal palace where it is possible to witness the changing of the guard every day at 12. The royal residence is immersed in a medieval atmosphere, narrow streets, ancient palaces and Gothic churches. Amiable and relaxed, a capital city on a human as they should be all!

Uppsala

One morning during our stay in Sweden, after having shot and knew enough about the capital, we head towards the university town of Uppsala. This is a small town of 180,000 inhabitants, 70 km north of Stockholm, reachable in 40 minutes by train (punctuality unlike those Italians!). Uppsala is home of the oldest university in Sweden, among the oldest in Europe. The City is cut in two by Furu River which flows into an inlet of the lake Melaren, who also bathes Stockholm. Here lies the biggest scandinavian Cathedral, Domkyrkan, Protestant church in which they are found, for example, the remains of the Holy Eric (patron of Sweden) and Charles Linnaeus, naturalist which is responsible for the classification of plants still in use (binary nomenclature). On a small hill there is a castle, which would seem to many more like a military barracks This small town is worth a visit because of its ancient past.
