Last winter I made a trip that marked me deeply. A slow journey, meditated, suffered and exciting. After 9 months in Australia i flew to Auckland, New Zealand, I bought a mountain bike, two bags, a tent and started to explore the two main islands of the country. After two and a half months i reached Christchurch changed. Not just physically (I think I lost 7-8kg) but especially mentally. The trip took me to live in contact with nature, to remain for most of the time alone with myself. I faced difficult weather conditions, challenging roads, I slept on the roadside and in the middle of the forest. I enjoyed a spectacular sunrise on Fox glacier at Christmas and a breathtaking sunset on Mount Cook. I visited tourist attractions such as Wai-o-Tapu where people are stacked to enter, but i also remained alone waiting twilight on Curio bay while yellow-eyed penguins were back from a day of fishing on the high seas.
I decided to collect everythink in a book (e-book?) trying to share emotions and trying to guide those who will follow me through this country. For the moment I have only completed the story of the path followed on the North island and then the book is just a half-book. I do not know when and if i will ever conclude the story of the South but for now you can download the first part. The PDF file is absolutely free, A5, printable duplex. I ask you only to leave a feedback (comment on this article) showing your opinions and criticism.
I'm sorry but this book is only in Italian. I didn't translate it for the moment and i don't think i will translate it anytime. If you speak italian you can download the book here, and if you are so keen about it, i'll be happy if you want to translate it in english or any other language!
Following you can find the first book's pages (in italian). Thank you.

I needed a few days to come back, not only physically, in Italy. It wasn't easy to get used once again to the habit, to the house, to the polluted and gray sky, to the mountains that surround me, to the cold winter and ... to the usual italian political discussions and wars! After two days I already regretted to be returned: a glance at the television had been enough to understand that nothing had changed in a year of absence: tits and ass first, our policy at home then and occasionally flash from around the world. The only solution has been to shut the video down, leaving home and meeting old friends and relatives: pleasant days that have reported myself with mind in Italy. To leave behind, at least for the moment, this splendid years down under and the last two months cycling, I wrote down what i remembered about New Zealand without reread kilometres of the diary i wrote. Just to see what remained to me about these opposed islands. This below is the result ... |

Sitting on a lawn to enjoy a warm sun and the breeze in the Botanic
Gardens evening in Christchurch, finally free from the needs to
close the bags and pack the bike, I think back to the last two months
and to what i'll keep with me...
